Woodcut, image size 5 x 3 7/8 inches, from the "Small Passion Series," c. 1511, monogrammed in plate, l.r., lifetime impression. Durer, a well known artist of the Northern Renaissance, was greatly admired during his lifetime for his paintings, drawings and prints. He traveled to Italy twice, bringing inspiration from the Italian Renaissance to his hometown in Nuremberg, Germany. This print is from the "Small Passion Series" of 37 woodcuts which Durer created from about 1507-1510, and first published in 1511.
