Rain Squall
Oil on canvas view of Grand Manan, attributed to Harrison Bird Brown, 12 x 20 inches, partial signature and title on reverse.
Born in Portland, Maine, as Henry Box Brown, he began his artistic career as a sign and banner painter. After changing his name, he focused exclusively on producing fine art. His subjects were the rugged coasts of his home state. Brown was a member of the Portland Art Society, of which he was elected president in 1892, shortly before he relocated to London, England, where he died in 1915.
