Oil on board, 8 x 5 7/8 inches, c. 1860s, signed "J Hamilton" l.l., in a period gilt frame. Born in Ireland, James Hamilton emigrated to America in his teens and had a very successful career as an artist, becoming known for his landscapes and marine paintings. This intimate landscape is features the soft light of sunset touching the water and the leaves of the trees in a way that brings the entire scene to life.
