Oil on canvas, 18 x 23 1/2 inches, in a very fine period gilt and gesso frame. There is a partial obscure signature and date in the painting lower right, the early label on the back is from the gallery of Charles G. Calder who was a well known Providence, R.I. painting dealer, also on the back is a partial label from Whitaker studios. This is a fine Barbizon style landscape painting by American artist George William Whitaker. Whitaker was a teacher and important painter in Providence R.I. and was known as an American tonalist, influenced by George Inness and Alexander Wyant. At a young age he traveled to Paris where his paintings became heavily influenced by the Barbizon painters of the Fontainebleu, especially the talented Francois Millet. George Whitaker's excellence in art is equaled to his contribution to the development of a Rhode Island art community. He was instrumental in recognizing the need for an organization to nurture and support the talented artists within the state. The Providence Art Club was formally instituted in 1880 by Whitaker and his friends Sydney Burleigh, E.M. Bannister and Charles Walter Stetson.

This is an original painting by American artist Platt Powell Ryder.  This scene of the Village Market Place was painted circa 1870, signed by Ryder lower right with ANA after his name, when he was an established member of the National Art Academy.   The painting is oil on board, framed underglass.  Excellent condition in what appears to be the original 19th century frame.  The painting itself measures 7 3/4X10 1/4 inches.  The frame itself has some chips to the corners.

A lovely scene of the Dutch countryside during summer harvest by Berend Adrianus Bongers. The painting size is 14 3/4 x 28 3/4 inches and is housed in a period frame measuring 25 1/2 x 39 inches. Signed by the artist on the lower right with a date of "1906" found on the back of the frame. Bongers was a "Delft" master and painted in the manner of the "Hague School" where views of domestic life and its daily activities were often painted. Educated at the Academy of Art in The Hague, he painted landscapes, portraits, genre scenes and still lifes. He was a draftsman, engraver, watercolorist and teacher. For many years he was the "chef d'atelier" at Delft Pottery.

This is an original oil on linen painting by British artist Clara Klinghoffer (1900-1970) Klinghoffer had her first one-woman exhibition of sixty works in London during 1919, when she was 19. The critics hailed her as "Masterly” - "…a dazzling radiance that has no equal at present in Pall Mall. Her many press clippings and Reviews and the Museum collections worldwide which purchased her artwork, including the Tate Gallery and the National Portrait Gallery, document Clara's fame through the next ten years in England and Europe.  The title of this work is Gerda and Her Cat, identified with a label on the back.  The painting measures 27X25 inches, signed lower right corner.

Oil on Academy Board, 12 x 9 inches, signed and inscribed "M. v. Schmaedel/München" lower right, period frame. The sitter is identified in a copy of a letter dated August 3, 1905, from Seth Mendell to William C. Davenport, President of The Machinists' Bank, Taunton, Massachusetts, in an envelope affixed to the back of the painting. Provenance: Estate of N. David Scotti, Providence, Rhode Island.

This is an original oil on canvas painting signed "F. Yoshida", lower left.  This artist is Fujio Yoshida (1887-1987)

Fujio was the wife of the well known woodblock artist Hiroshi Yoshida and the Mother of Toshi.  She was the first female in the Yoshida family to become a well known artist.  Fujio was known for her western style paintings.  This painting measures 20X24 inches.  It is housed in a hand carved wooden frame.  We assume the painting to be from the late 1930's to possibly 1940.

Watercolor on paper, signed and dated lower right, 1807, 20 x 27 inches in a gold 29 x 25 inch frame. A beautifully detailed watercolor that remains vibrant, even after over 200 years. Ramsay Reinagle first studied under his father, Phillip Reinagle, before going on to study in Italy, Holland, and Rome. Reinagle painted portraits, historical subjects, animals, and landscapes. He exhibited at the Royal Academy and the Society of Painters in Watercolours.

This is an original oil on canvas painting by Boston artist A.C. Goodwin.  The title of this work appeared on the stretcher as Autumn Landscape, circa 1925.  The painting measures 25X29 inches.  Signed
"A.C. Goodwin" lower left, This painting is framed in a modern gold frame.  "Goodwin was born in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, and was raised in Chelsea Massachusetts. He did not begin painting until the age of thirty and became a self-taught Impressionist and also a follower of the Ashcan School led by Robert Henri. After painting in Boston in both oil and pastel for a twenty-year period, Goodwin gained the recognition of famous art figures including John Singer Sargent, Mrs. Jack Gardner, and John T. Spaulding.  Childe Hassam was quoted as describing Goodwin as "the greatest painter in  Boston.  In 1921, he left Boston for New York City and had a studio on Washington Square where he "developed a reputation as one of the few American Impressionists to prefer urban subjects" (Spanierman) including bridges, parks and avenues. He and his wife then lived in Chatham, New York where he painted many landscapes. In 1929, he returned to Boston and resumed his Bohemian lifestyle. "

This is an original unsigned portrait of a young boy with hat attributed to Joseph Whiting Stock..  Oil on canvas, the painting measures 36X28 inches.  This portrait is very similar to other portraits by Stock, the expression, angle of view and also the use of a floor pattern which he shows in most of his paintings.  Stock was one of the most important Folk Art painters of the early 19th century.  The painting has been relined in the past and has a few minor spots of touchup.  Nothing major.  Unframed.

This is an early 20th century landscape painting, oil on canvas titled: "The Oak", it was created circa 1920-30's.  It is signed lower left corner with the initials A. F. and also initialed and titled on the back of the canvas.  The painting itself measures 18X24 inches.  A fine impressionistic view of a woodland scene with a figure in the background.  Very good condition, the artist is a mystery.  This might possibly be the work of Alexis J. Fournier...

This is an original oil on canvas painting by American Tonalist ,Charles P. Appel.  This painting measures 12X16 inches, signed lower right.  This painting came with a partial Salmagundi Club label on the back.  Appel is known for romantic landscapes and marine paintings in Tonalist and Impressionistic styles. He studied at the New York School of Art with Francis Luis Mora and William Merritt Chase and later with Frank Vincent DuMond at The Art Students League. He became a member of the Salmagundi Club in New York City in 1906.

Oil on canvas, 15 x 21 1/2 inches, c. 1880s, attributed to John Appleton Brown, partial monogram lower left corner, in a period frame. John Appleton Brown was born in Newburyport, Ma and studied painting with Albert T. Bricher and Benjamin C. Porter, then traveled to Paris to study with Emile Lambinet. He became known for his Barbizon inspired landscapes of New England and images of apple orchards, earning himself the nickname "Appleblossom Brown." Brown was a member of the Society of American Artists and the National Academy of Design. He exhibited his work at the Paris Salon, The Boston Art Club, The Carnegie Institute, and the Art Institute of Chicago, as well as in exhibitions with the Society of American Artists and the National Academy of Design.

This is an original oil on mahogany panel by Belgian artist Henri Van Seben (1825-1913)  This view of two young girls measures 9X6 1/4 inches.  Signed lower left corner and housed in a period gilt frame, labels and import stickers on the back of the panel.  This painting done circa 1870 is in fine condition, a few minor chips to the frame.  A very expressive work of art.
