A great sporting etching by Frank Benson, this image measures 14 x 10 7/8 inches, 1922, cat: Ordeman-213, pencil signed. A very rich impression on a medium weight laid type paper. Frank Benson was a very successful painter and a member of "The Ten" along with Childe Hassam and J. Alden Weir, before he began the sporting paintings and etchings for which he is most widely known. He was a founding member of the Boston Guild of Artists and a long time teacher at the Museum School in Boston. In 1912, at the age of 50, Benson began his etchings and drypoints, mainly of wild fowl which he depicted with expressive lines and rich toning that exquisitely captured the life and energy of the wild birds. His etchings were in high demand from the very start, and have remained favorites for collectors ever since.
This is one of the most impressive etchings by American artist Stephen Parrish. It is titled: "A GLOUCESTER WHARF", it was created and printed in 1886. It was one of three plates that Parrish did exclusively in dry point. The image is quite large, measuring 17 7/8X11 7/8 inches, printed on a medium weight wove type hard paper, A beautiful impression with extensive use of plate tone in the sky and sea. Printed with brown ink, fine condition. The Oil,Sounds & Livers advertised on the building are important fisheries products. Sounds are fish air bladders ground up for use in making isinglass. This is a fine example of the Paris etchings created by Manuel Robbe in the early quarter of the 20th century. This etching is titled: "Moulin Rouge", created circa 1925.
This is a combination of color aquatint and etching, it was published by L'Estampe Moderne in an edition of 200. The image measures 11 3/8X15 1/2 inches. This etching is hand signed lower right and identified as an artist proof on the lower left. This etching was originally sold and framed by Merrill Chase Galleries in Chicago, the labels and information are attached to the back of the frame. The etching appears to be in flawless condition, rich colors and inking.
This incredible image by the British etcher, Arthur Briscoe, measures 8 1/8 x 15 3/8 inches, inked signed and numbered, 73/75, created in 1931. Briscoe studied at the Slade Art School and the Academy Julian in Paris and then spent the rest of his time sailing, becoming one of the most prominent British marine artists of the 20th century. He owned his own three ton cutter which he used to sail around the Essex coast. Also crewing on a Polish ship, he sketched every aspect of life on the boat. Most of Briscoe's etchings show sailing ships and the men who sailed them. His beautifully etched images present an invaluable historical record of the workings of the last great commercial vessels.
Aquatint, image size 10 1/2 x 16 1/4 inches, 1918, cat. Hardie-163, pencil signed. One of Short's largest aquatints, this scene depicts two fishermen on the Bure at Stokesby Ferry near Acle in Norfolk.
This is a fine original pencil signed etching by Swedish artist Anders Zorn (1860-1920) The title of this work is "Alder", a fine study of two nudes from his Series on Nude Bathers. This etching was created and printed in 1917, it appears in his catalog as Hjert & Hjert number 282. The image measures 7X4 3/4 inches, printed on a laid type paper with watermark. Very nice condition, printed with a warm toned ink.
This remarkable etching is one of Eby's finest prints, and is featured on the front cover of the Giardina catalog. The image size is 8 5/8 x 15 5/8 inches, published in an edition of 100 in 1931, cat: Giardina-168, pencil signed "Kerr Eby imp", the 'imp' indicating that Eby printed this impression himself. This image is one of several landscapes Eby made depicting his house in Westport, Connecticut and with it's rich tonal range and vivid contrasts, it is by far one of his most impressive images. This etching features a very richly inked impression on a medium weight watermarked wove type paper.
This is a beautifully colored etching and aquatint by French master of the Belle Epoch, Manuel Robbe (1872-1936) The title of this work is" Claudine" it was created and printed in 1903 and Published by Sagot in Paris. The image measures 12X9 3/4 inches, printed on a medium weight Arches watermarked laid paper. deckeled edges, a very rich impression, excellent condition. Robbe studied at the Academie Julien and then the Ecole des Beaux Artes. His technique of hand coloring the images means that no two are exactly alike, a very painterly technique.

This is a beautiful sun drenched scene of Havana, Cuba by Scottish artist James McBey. Etching, image size 6 7/8 x 12 7/8 inches, 1940, plate signed and dated, hand signed and numbered "XXXVIII" in ink. Born into poverty McBey was primarily self-taught, becoming a very well respected artist and leading figure of the British Etching Revival. He traveled extensively throughout Europe, America and the Middle East, creating remarkable etchings of the places he visited.
This is an original handsigned woodblock print by Latvian-American artist Isac Friedlander. This work is titled: "Ghetto", it was created and printed in 1942. It is a very scarce image by this artist. It was created and printed in 1942. The image measures 9 3/4X10 7/8 inches. pencil signed titled and dated in the lower margin. This image was printed in an edition of only 26 signed proofs.. Isac Friedlander was born in 1890 in Mitau, Latvia. Those were difficult days for a captive people under the czarist yoke, but it was not long before young Isac’s assertive spirit emerged. At sixteen he was arrested and condemned to death, along with several of his classmates, for protesting compulsory uniforms and weekend curfews. His classmates were shot but his sentence was commuted to life imprisonment.
Fortunately, Friedlander’s skills in drawing and the portraits he did of his prison guards and their children came to the attention of a local functionary, who took an interest in him. In four years he was released. The war years of the 1940’s found him deeply troubled in spirit by the reports of sufferings and persecution of his people throughout Nazi-dominated Europe. Having experienced first hand in his youth the depth of man’s inhumanity to his fellow man, he now produced his heart-rending and powerful prints of the holocaust.
Friedlander’s woodcuts, wood engravings, and etchings are powerful expressions of the human condition. Death took him in 1968, but not before his spirit found renewed expression in his masterful prints of life among America’s urban blacks as the winds of social change were gathering to redress the wrongs of generations.
