James Wells Champney

This is an original oil on canvas painting of a young girl in a garden holding an apple.  The work is by James Wells Champney, the painting is signed "Champ: lower left and dated "75"  1875.  We feel this painting was created when Champney went to France to study art with Edouard Frere..  This painting measures 22X18 inches.  The painting has been relined and has some small areas of touchup in the red dress.  Chamney later became a professor at Smith College in Northampton, he is best known for his genre subjects and his illustrations in pastel.
