American Paintings

This is an original watercolor and gouache painting of a Sailing vessel. Created  in the mid 19th century.  The painting measures 18 1/2X27 inches.  The overall condition is good, there is some bleed through from the original wooden backing.  The painting came to us in what appears to be the original maple 19th century frame.  The overall frame measures 21 1/2X29 1/2 inches.  the painting has the artists initials lower left, E.W.  The ship shows a British flag, and the ship is named on the hull "the Sensation"

This is an original 19th century American School painting of a Steamer in a stormy seas.  The painting is oil on board framed in a fine gilded oak frame.  The painting measures 11 1/2X18 inches.  No apparent signature.  In very fine condition.

Oil on artist board, 12 x 16 inches, c. 1930, unsigned. Born in Germany, Saling emigrated to America through Ellis Island in 1893 at the age of 17. He was a successful decorator and artist first in New York City, then in Hartford, Connecticut. In the late 1920s, he moved to Lyme, Connecticut, the setting for many of his landscapes. He was a member of many prestigious artist's groups, including the Salmagundi Club, the Connecticut Academy of Fine Arts, the Connecticut League of Art Students and the Springfield Art League.

This is an original oil on tin painting of a young woman.  It is apparently unsigned and so we are calling this 19th century American School.  The painting measures 8X7 inches, it came to us in a period gilt frame which measures 12 1/2X11 1/2 inches.  Expertly painted, this is a fine example of 19th century American portraiture.

This is an original oil on canvas painting by German American artist Hugo Breul (1854-1910)  This painting is signed lower left corner.  The canvas measures 9X6 inches.  The frame is 10 1/2X7 1/2 inches. A fine rich multi layer amber glazing to the portrait.  Very well captured.  In what appears to be the original early Whistler style frame.  We feel that  this painting dates from the late 1890's.

This is a sweetly intimate portrait of a young woman, oil on board, 6 5/8 x 4 5/8 inches, c. 1920, signed lower right, framed. John Califano grew up in Italy and began showing his work as a young man, winning a gold medal in Naples, Italy. In 1881 he emigrated to the United States where he lived for several years in Chicago before settling in California. He was known for his California landscapes as well as portraits and genre scenes and showed his work at the National Academy of Design, New York, and the Art Institute of Chicago.

This pastel still life by Dexter Dawes measures 21 1/8 x 14 1/8 inches and is signed by the artist in the lower right corner. Dawes was born in Englewood, NJ and went on to study at New York City's Art Student League. He summered in Marlboro, NH surrounded by beautiful gardens with views of Mount Monadnock which became the inspiration for many of his lithographs and paintings. He belonged to a number of associations including the National Arts Club.

This is an original small oil on board painting by American artist Franz Fleig.  Signed lower right this painting has an image size of 4 1/4X5 1/2 inches.  Fleig was a member of the New York Society of Independent artists in 1938.  This painting is framed in what appears to be the period frame that the artist used.
