Steamship Nantasket in the Tornado, June 16th 1879

This is a dramatic painting by Boston artist Clement Drew.  This image is Identified on the back, Steamship Nantasket in the Tornado, June 16th 1879.  This painting was created and signed C. Drew lower right corner.  This oil on canvas measures 14X22 inches.  The painting has been laid down onto a board, the restorer transposed the writing on the back of the canvas to a backing canvas.  The painting is in a fine gilt frame.  This is a very dramatic study of a sidewheeler in trouble, caught in a storm.   Some cracking to the paint at the lower inch of the composition.  Clement Drew was an artist and "dealer in picture-frames" in Boston, Massachusetts, in the 19th century. He specialized in marine paintings. He kept a studio on Court Street and Tremont Street, in Boston in the mid 19th century..
