A wonderful painting by the "father of Russian Futurism", David Burliuk. Oil on canvas board, 13 x 13 inches, framed, signed on the lower left. Painted with heavy impasto brushwork. Burliuk studied at the Royal Academy in Munich and at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris. In his most active period he participated in many important avant-garde exhibitions in Kyiv, Moscow, St. Petersburg, and Munich. The appearance of the Futurists, as they called themselves, liked to wear gaudy waistcoats, sometimes painted animals on their faces, and wore wooden spoons in their lapels. Their performances drew packed audiences, scandalized many, but also won many new converts to this new vision of art. Burliuk’s exuberance for life, his creative force, and his celebration of the new left a lasting impact on the history of modernism. His later work reflected the life in rural Russia. This image is an expression of his memories of childhood in Russia at the turn of the century.
William Preston Phelps was a plein air painter. In 1876, he travelled to Europe and began studying at the Royal Academy of Art in Munich. He later moved to New York and then back to Europe with his friend William Meritt Chase. Framed oil on canvas, 25 x 48 inches. Provenance originally sold by Doll & Richards, label on back. Painting is in original custom frame. Signed in the lower right with the word "munchen," meaning it was painted in Munich. Circa 1879.
This is an original oil on canvas painting by American artist Edward Moran. This view of Fishing boats at sunset is clearly signed lower left corner. The canvas measures 9 1/2X20 inches. Framed in an early Walnut molding.
"Seascapes were Moran's forté. By the 1880s, the artist was considered such an expert on the subject that his "hints for practical study' of marine painting were published in the September and November, 1888, issues of the Art Amateur. After his death, an admirer wrote that "As a painter of the sea in its many moods and phases, Edward Moran ... had no superior in America."
"Edward Moran moved with his family to New York City in 1870. During this time, New York harbor was bustling with marine traffic. While in New York, Moran had the opportunity to work with the luminist artists John F. Kensett, Martin Johnson Heade and Sanford R. Gifford, who all exhibited regularly at the National Academy of Design. Moran quickly absorbed the concepts of luminism and for several years experimented with this aesthetic. As a result, in the early 1870's his palette brightens, his compositions are simpler, and the light in his paintings is more atmospheric."
This is an original oil on canvas board painting by Monadnock New Hampshire artist Albert Quigley. Circa 1930,s this scene of a winter landscape, most likely from the Monadnock area is an impressionist depiction of the landscape covered in snow. The painting measures 18X24 inches, signed Albert Quigley lower left corner. It came to us in what is certain to be his own hand made picture frame. He was known to sell his frames to many of the local artists of the region. Including Alexander James and other artists of Dublin New Hampshire. "Albert Duvall Quigley moved to Nelson, New Hampshire, in 1934, when he was 43 years old, and created the vast majority of his work in this northern New England hill town. He lived there with his wife, Mildred, and their three children, Terrence, Tami, and Barnabas, until his death in 1961."

This painting came to us with a label on the back, this painting was in the collection of Minette Hunsiker Cummings, the artists niece. The painting is signed lower right corner.

His wife, Lee Lufkin Kaula, was also a painter, and together they spent several summers in the countryside sketching. This is an original oil on canvas painting by American artist Frank Vining Smith (1879-1967) This painting is clearly signed lower right corner. This painting although in the catalog is titled: "Sunset Glow" on the back of the canvas is an alternate title: "The New Moon" The canvas measures 22X30 inches and comes in a fine custom gilt frame. This painting was originally sold through Anderson Galleries in Chicago. They promoted Smiths works in the late 1920's.

THE annually recurrent exhibition of paintings of ships and the sea by Frank Vining Smith at the Anderson Galleries always makes an agreeable event about this season. Some thirty of Mr. Smith’s new canvases have just been hung at Anderson’s, and the impression they give is possibly more favorable than it has been in the past.
Even granting the sea’s changeless, ever-changing character and the myriad sorts and conditions of ships that sail it, Mr. Smith’s fertility and inventiveness appear more remarkable than ever in this exhibition. His knowledge of his subject is profound, in the opinion of sailors, who are always harsh critics. His ability to paint workmanlike pictures has long been established. But the ease with which he continues to find variations on a now familiar theme remain surprising." This is a very fine study of a view of the sea right after sunset.
This is an original oil on board painting by Canadian artist Albert Edward Cloutier ((1902-1965) Signed lower center, this painting has an image area of
29X35 inches. It came to us in what appears to be the original frame with the Walter Klinkhoff Gallery,Montreal, label on the back. The title of this work is:
"Winter Lac Ouimet, Mont Tremblant", it is a view of the Laurentian Mountains of Quebec. Albert Cloutier was a painter, commercial artist and muralist who grew up in Montreal. He also lived in Ottawa and during his time as a war artist was posted in several locations in eastern Canada. He was a member of the R.C.A. and also the CSGA. He moved to Saint-Hilaire, Quebec in 1959 where he lived the rest of his life. His mediums were primarily oils and graphics. His subjects were landscapes, commercial art and (during the war)the military. His style was expressionist and greatly influenced by the Group of Seven.
He studied art under A.Y.Jackson and Edwin Holgate. And from 1955 until 1965 he taught at the École des Beaux-Arts in Montreal.
Oil on canvas, 18 x 23 1/2 inches, in a very fine period gilt and gesso frame. There is a partial obscure signature and date in the painting lower right, the early label on the back is from the gallery of Charles G. Calder who was a well known Providence, R.I. painting dealer, also on the back is a partial label from Whitaker studios. This is a fine Barbizon style landscape painting by American artist George William Whitaker. Whitaker was a teacher and important painter in Providence R.I. and was known as an American tonalist, influenced by George Inness and Alexander Wyant. At a young age he traveled to Paris where his paintings became heavily influenced by the Barbizon painters of the Fontainebleu, especially the talented Francois Millet. George Whitaker's excellence in art is equaled to his contribution to the development of a Rhode Island art community. He was instrumental in recognizing the need for an organization to nurture and support the talented artists within the state. The Providence Art Club was formally instituted in 1880 by Whitaker and his friends Sydney Burleigh, E.M. Bannister and Charles Walter Stetson.
This is an original oil on canvas painting by American artist James Gale Tyler (1855-1931) Tyler is the well known marine painter of the age of sail. The title of this piece which appears hand written on the back is: "Clipper nearing Port", this painting was done circa 1900. It has a canvas size of 24X20 inches and is in a heavy modern hand carved frame. The overall frame size is: 32X28 inches. The painting is clearly signed lower left. The painting is in good shape, no tears or inpainting, not relined it could use a very light cleaning but it is quite presentable as it now appears. Ready to hang on your wall.
This is an original painting by American artist Platt Powell Ryder. This scene of the Village Market Place was painted circa 1870, signed by Ryder lower right with ANA after his name, when he was an established member of the National Art Academy. The painting is oil on board, framed underglass. Excellent condition in what appears to be the original 19th century frame. The painting itself measures 7 3/4X10 1/4 inches. The frame itself has some chips to the corners.
Oil on panel, 9 x 11 inches, 1874, signed and dated lower right, in a period gilt frame. This is a wonderful tonalist view of a horse drawn hay wagon bound for home in the bleak cold of winter. This painting is by well known Canadian painter Francois B. De Blois. His formal art education includes studies in Europe under Charles-François Daubigny, probably in Paris or Auvers sur Oise a suburb to the north of Paris; and under Vincenzo Marinelli in Naples, Italy. De Blois’s paintings were exhibited in the Paris Salon in 1878; and in the United States with the Boston Athenaeum 1867 – 1873, the Brooklyn Art Association in 1874, the Boston Art Club 1875 – 1882, and the National Academy of Design 1880 – 1882. More recently, a De Blois painting was included in the 2008 exhibition titled “The Grand Tour Art and Travel, 1740 – 1914” at the Indiana University Art Museum.
