This is an original oil on canvas painting by American Hudson River artist James McDougal Hart.  The painting measures 30X23 inches, signed and dated 1881 in the lower left corner.  This painting came to us in what appears to be the original period frame.  The painting had been lined and is in excellent condition.  A beautiful work, Hart at his best.  "Born in Kilmarnock, Scotland, James Hart was a leading figure of the second generation Hudson River School painters and was known for idyllic landscapes, especially with cows. His family emigrated to Albany, New York in 1830 ". James McDougal Hart served as the Vice President for three years of the National Academy of Design. He became a member in 1859.

This is an original oil on canvas painting by American marine artist Harry Chase.  The title is: Windy Day Coast of Holland.  It is signed and dated , Scheveningen 1879 in the lower right corner and titled on the back of the canvas. The painting measures 20X36 inches and is in a fine carved  gilt picture frame.   This painting was created during his time studying in Holland under Mesdag and Gerdts.  He was strongly influenced by the  Hague School of Dutch Impressionism. He brought back to America many of his paintings done in those three years in Holland. These paintings were brought back to St. Louis where they were offered  in a   solo show at Pettes and Leathe Gallery in St. Louis in 1880.  All of his paintings were sold at this show.He also illustrated the catalog with etchings of his paintings.. This one, A Windy Day,  was purchased by Marc Holmes of St. Louis, later Chicago.  A fine impressionistic view of the Coast of Holland.  We have extensive information about the provenance of this work.

This is an original early William Preston Phelps painting titled: The Homestead, N.H.  This  oil painting from circa 1890 has a canvas size 18X30 inches.  It is in a heavy Gold Leaf  frame of the same period as the painting. There is a couple of old labels on the back. The painting is in good shape, no evidence of restoration.  Signed lower left corner.  The house in view is most likely Phelps own in Chesham New Hampshire.

This is an original oil on canvas by American Tonalist artist J. Francis Murphy.(1853-1921)  This view of Twilight in Autumn was set most likely in the Catskill Mountains of New York.  The image measures 18X30 inches.  It is signed J.Francis Murphy and dated 90 in the lower left corner.  This painting was previously sold through Christies in New York, January 1999.  The painting is housed in a fine carved gilt frame.  The painting has been professionally relined and is in very fine condition.  "Murphy's simmering sunsets and autumn melancholy are deceptive, his best work embodies the radical experiments of his contemporaries (Ryder, Innes, Blakelock) tempered with a cool poise and exquisite indwelling depth of tone." William Preston Phelps was a plein air painter. In 1876, he travelled to Europe and began studying at the Royal Academy of Art in Munich. He later moved to New York and then back to Europe with his friend William Meritt Chase. Framed oil on canvas, 25 x 48 inches. Provenance originally sold by Doll & Richards, label on back. Painting is in original custom frame. Signed in the lower right with the word "munchen," meaning it was painted in Munich. Circa 1879.

This is an early still Life of Flowers,  oil on chamfered panel by American artist Abbott Fuller Graves.  Created circa 1900 this painting is signed lower left corner and has an image size of 8  5/8 X 6 5/8 inches.  Good condition with a few minor cracks in the panel, unobtrusive.  This painting is housed in a period gilt frame.  Graves worked with both Edmund Tarbell and Childe Hassam who he met while studying in Paris at the Academie  Julian. The former owner purchased this painting at Christies Auction House, N.Y. at their American Painting sale of March 1992.

This is an impressive large seascape by American Marine painter Franklin Dullin Briscoe.  This view of fishing boats at sunset, oil on canvas with an image size of 28X50 inches.  It is signed and dated lower right corner, 1873.  This painting came to us in a fine modern cove style gilt frame.  The overall size of the frame is: 34X56 inches.  One of the best Briscoes weve seen.

This painting of a lakeside cottage is by American artist Henry Pember Smith (1854-1907)  This oil on canvas measures 12X16 inches.  Signed lower right corner.  Framed in a period carved and gilt molding.  Very fine condition, one tiny repair in the upper left, invisible to the eye.  His landscapes are his best known works, particularly those of New England, Spain, Italy, England.  "Working primarily in oils and watercolors, and using a tighter technique than the emerging impressionists of his time, Smith was a true realist."

This is an original William Preston Phelps painting of Cows watering in a stream.  This oil on canvas is clearly signed lower right corner.  The image measures 12X18 inches and is in a period gold leaf frame.  This painting is in excellent original condition, no flaws or imperfections.  Phelps was the well known painter of the Monadnock region of New Hampshire.  This work dates to circa 1900.

This is a very fine original oil on board painting by Monadnock artist William Preston Phelps.  This 19th century view of a Wooden Bridge, in the forest surrounding Mount Monadnock  in  Dublin,  New Hampshire.  This painting measures 12 1/4X22 1/2 inches.  It is clearly signed lower center, "W.P.Phelps".  The painting came to us in what appears to be the original gilt frame.  The painting and frame are in wonderful original untouched condition.  We date this work to be circa 1890's.  A beautiful summer scene in the wooded forest of New Hampshire.

This oil on canvas painting of an Autumn Stream was the work of American Tonalist Franklin de Haven (1856-1934).  This painting measures 30X24 inches.  It is signed lower right corner and was created circa 1918.  A fine tonalist study of a stream at a lower angle of view.  de Haven was a member of the Salmagundi Club where he had numerous shows and won many awards for his impressionistic works of art.  This painting was quite similar to the one illustrated on page 464 of the Cleveland Book on American Tonalism.

This is an original oil on board painting by Canadian artist Albert Edward Cloutier ((1902-1965) Signed lower center, this painting has an image area of
29X35 inches. It came to us in what appears to be the original frame with the Walter Klinkhoff Gallery,Montreal, label on the back. The title of this work is:
"Winter Lac Ouimet, Mont Tremblant", it is a view of the Laurentian Mountains of Quebec. Albert Cloutier was a painter, commercial artist and muralist who grew up in Montreal. He also lived in Ottawa and during his time as a war artist was posted in several locations in eastern Canada. He was a member of the R.C.A. and also the CSGA. He moved to Saint-Hilaire, Quebec in 1959 where he lived the rest of his life. His mediums were primarily oils and graphics. His subjects were landscapes, commercial art and (during the war)the military. His style was expressionist and greatly influenced by the Group of Seven.
He studied art under A.Y.Jackson and Edwin Holgate. And from 1955 until 1965 he taught at the École des Beaux-Arts in Montreal.
