This is a very rare etching from a scarce, unpublished plate by Francis Sydney Unwin. The image size is 12 1/8 x 16 inches, 1916, pencil signed; a richly inked impression on a fine cream colored Japan paper. Unwin studied at the Winchester School of Art and the Slade School; he traveled extensively throughout Europe and spent several months in Egypt drawing the tomb interiors for an archaeological expedition. He then settled in London, becoming known for his landscapes and remarkable interior architectural views, such as this finely detailed image of the Albert Hall. Unwin died at the age of 40, after suffering from tuberculosis for much of his adult life.

Isabel Bishop was one of New York City’s leading printmakers from the late 1930’s to the 1960’s. Bishop both studied at, and taught at, the Art Students League in New York and made her home and studio in the heart of the bustling urban scene. The work of Isabel Bishop focuses entirely on the depiction of figures.

This is a fine original wood engraving after Homer, published in Harpers Weekly in September 20, 1873. This is a wood engraving with the original Harpers written story on the back of the sheet. "Hardie writes, "Margot, the twelve-year-old daughter of Dr. and Mrs. Murray, in a fancy dress made to resemble that of Lopokova, the Russian dancer, stands with head slightly bent forward and arms at sides. On the left, her mother is sitting with arms outstretched altering the fop flounce of the dress."
