This is a very fine original etching and drypoint by British artist Sir Francis Seymour Haden. The title of this work is "On the Test", state VI/VIII. This etching was created in 1859 and its subject is one of the famous Trout streams in Hampshire. The image measures 5 15/16X 8 15/16 inches, pencil signed lower right and also signed in the plate. This appears in the Schneiderman catalog as image number 24.
This is a fine atmospheric etching by British artist Frank Short, the title is: The Old Chelsea Bridge and Church, by the RIver Thames, it was created and printed in 1884. Hand signed in pencil the image measures 6 5/8X14 1/8 inches. Printed in brown ink on a heavy weight wove type sheet.
This is a very richly inked original etching by French artist Albert Besnard. The image size is 11 3/8 x 7 5/8 inches, published in 1887 in an edition of fewer than 100 impressions, cat: Coppier- 63, pencil signed. Besnard studied at the Ecole des Beaux Arts in Paris and for the beginning of his artistic career concentrated on a very academic style of painting and composition, before adopting a more impressionistic approach of portraying light and color; later he went to England to study portraiture with Thomas Gainesborough and Joshua Reynolds.
This is a fine large etching by French artist Alphonse Legros. The title is; Le Retour du Bois (Return from the Woods), Created circa 1880's. This was part of his series known as Death and the Wood cutter. This pencil signed impression measures 9 1/4X14 inches. Legros was a well known founder of the etching revival in France. This is one of his largest compositions. This image is in the collections of many museums through out the world. The catalog listing is Bliss 565. Printed on a medium weight laid type paper with partial watermark.

Sir Francis Seymour Haden was one of the most important British etchers of the 19th century, along with his brother in law James Whistler. In addition to being a highly regarded artist he was a successful surgeon, accomplished author and dedicated angler. He was a founder and the first president of the Royal Society of Painter-Etchers and Engravers, and was knighted in 1894.

This is a fine intimate portrait of the artist's wife by French artist Albert Besnard (1849-1934) This image is hand signed and incribed in pencil lower border, the image measures 3 13/16X2 3/8 inches. "This intimate portrait presents the artist’s wife, Charlotte, in a private moment, eyes closed and head propped on a pillow. Besnard must have admired his wife’s profile. He depicted her from this angle, in both paintings and prints, no less than six time." This impression was in a show at the Utah Museum of Fine Arts, in a show titled "Images of Women: 19th Century French Prints."

One of Haden's interests apart from being a Surgeon and printmaker was fishing. He created a number of outstanding scenes based on river fishing, his most famous being "The Complete Angler" and "Grayling Fishing." This is a wonderful example of building a composition centered on this well-known fishing hole. Provenance: Baldwin-Wallace College.
