American Paintings

This is an original 19th century American School painting of a Steamer in a stormy seas.  The painting is oil on board framed in a fine gilded oak frame.  The painting measures 11 1/2X18 inches.  No apparent signature.  In very fine condition.


This is a fine oil on board painting by American artist, Jay  H. Connaway.  This painting is signed lower right and also signed and titled on the back of the board. "A Big Wave", it was created circa 1940's when Connaway lived and painted on Monhegan Island.  This was also after he was elected as a Member of the National Academy of Design.  The painting mesures 8X10 inches, in a fine period frame.


This is an original oil on tin painting of a young woman.  It is apparently unsigned and so we are calling this 19th century American School.  The painting measures 8X7 inches, it came to us in a period gilt frame which measures 12 1/2X11 1/2 inches.  Expertly painted, this is a fine example of 19th century American portraiture.  


This is an original oil on canvas painting by German American artist Hugo Breul (1854-1910)  This painting is signed lower left corner.  The canvas measures 9X6 inches.  The frame is 10 1/2X7 1/2 inches. A fine rich multi layer amber glazing to the portrait.  Very well captured.  In what appears to be the original early Whistler style frame.  We feel that  this painting dates from the late 1890's.



This is an interesting original watercolor on paper, in the style of Homer, a View of the Palm Trees blowing in the Breeze.  The image is indistinctly signed lower right, weve been unable to figure this one out.  It is from the period circa 1910, painted on a lightly textured watercolor paper.  The image measures 10X14 inches.  a few minor foxing marks in the sky, overall in very nice shape.  Framed with a modern gilt frame.


This is an original oil on board painting by American artist Francis Stillwell Dixon.  This painting done circa 1940 measures an image of 4 3/4X6 3/4 inches, signed lower right Francis Dixon.  The painting is framed in a silver molding which measures 12X13 1/2 inches.  Very fine condition under glass.  On the back of the board is written the tiitle "North Easter"....


This is a fine watercolor painting by American artist Nora S Unwin.  The title, inscribed on the backing board is: A Memory of Greece.  This painting is hand signed and dated 1966 by the artist.  The image measures 13 1/2X17 1/2 inches.  Unwin was the well known artist and illustrator who lived and worked in Peterborough New Hampshire.  This watercolor on artist board is in very fine condition.


This is a sweetly intimate portrait of a young woman, oil on board, 6 5/8 x 4 5/8 inches, c. 1920, signed lower right, framed. John Califano grew up in Italy and began showing his work as a young man, winning a gold medal in Naples, Italy. In 1881 he emigrated to the United States where he lived for several years in Chicago before settling in California. He was known for his California landscapes as well as portraits and genre scenes and showed his work at the National Academy of Design, New York, and the Art Institute of Chicago.


Oil on board, image size 7 1/4 x 9 1/2 inches, unsigned.


This pastel still life by Dexter Dawes measures 21 1/8 x 14 1/8 inches and is signed by the artist in the lower right corner. Dawes was born in Englewood, NJ and went on to study at New York City's Art Student League. He summered in Marlboro, NH surrounded by beautiful gardens with views of Mount Monadnock which became the inspiration for many of his lithographs and paintings. He belonged to a number of associations including the National Arts Club.
