Cattle and Sheep in a Pasture Beside a Stream

This is an oil on canvas painting that measures 18 x 24 inches in a gold 24 x 29 3/4 inch frame, and is signed in the lower left. A luminous painting with incredible colors. Charles Franklin Pierce was born in Sharon, NH and spent his early years on the family farm, where he found inspiration for his paintings. In 1864 he moved to Boston to attend art school and from there went to England, Scotland, and Wales to sketch the countryside. Pierce moved back to Boston, became a leader of the Boston Art Club, and married Luena Wilder of Peterborough, also a notable artist.

Landscape with Figure

Oil on canvas, signed "Richet" in the lower right. Sight size measures 21 x 17 inches, housed in a tasteful 25 1/2 x 21 1/2 inch gold frame. Léon Richet was raised during the height of the Barbizon school and was influenced by the works of Rousseau. He was a prolific painter whose works appear in many collections.

This mountain landscape by the American artist William R. Davis measures 8 x 10 inches, oil on board, indistinctly signed l.l., framed.

French Girls in a Field

This lovely oil on canvas by the New England artist Joseph Lindon Smith measures 12 x 9 inches, title and artist inscribed on the back, housed in a 19th century gilt frame, 1894. Smith was a founding member of the Dublin Art Colony in Dublin, NH and lifelong friends with the artist Frank Benson and Isabella Stewart Gardner. He studied at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston and the Academie Julian in Paris.

Farmer's Cottage

This 1862 oil on canvas by the British artist Alfred Vickers measures 11 3/4 x 15 3/4 inches, signed and dated l.l., housed in original frame, partial European label on back. Born in London, Vickers was a self-taught landscape painter, who exhibited at the British Institute and the Royal Academy.

Grazing Sheep at Dusk

Sheep grazing at the end of the day are featured in this oil on canvas by the French painter, Francois-Auguste Ortmans. Canvas size is 13 x 16 inches, signed and dated l.r., housed in a ornate gold frame, identified on a printed German label affixed to the stretcher also with a canvas stencil from Ancienne Maison Valle, Paris, on the reverse, and with a partial Parisian framemaker's label on the back of the frame.

The Summer Pasture

This is a beautiful sundrenched scene by French artist Auguste Bonheur, oil on canvas, 23 1/2 x 31 1/4 inches, c. 1860, signed, in an ornate period frame. Auguste Bonheur was born into the Bonheur family of animal painters; his father, Raymond Bonheur was an art teacher as well as artist and taught painting to both Auguste and his older sister, the renowned animal painter Rosa Bonheur. The Bonheurs kept a small barnyard with sheep, chickens, and a cow, which they would often portray in their paintings.
