Though a very successful portrait artist, especially of men, he is mainly remembered for his earlier works that took a realistic approach to the conditions of life of the London poor. This is a fine example of his early work, circa 1890.

The subject was thought to be made at Annie Bryant's old cottage in Kington Langley; at Rose Cottage, Corsham, the home of Heather Spackman, his future wife, and at the family house of the Spackmans. This etching was reprinted in 1982 with some changes made to the design, this is the early original impression, quite rare. Very fine condition. Hand signed and dated in pencil.

Waugh was the son of a well-known Philadelphia portrait painter, Samuel Waugh. He studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts with Thomas Eakins, and at the Académie Julian in Paris with Adolphe-William Bouguereau.
In his later years he lived on Bailey Island, Maine, and in Provincetown, Massachusetts. Waugh is best known for his seascape paintings on the Northeast Coast ..

This is a fine original oil on canvas by French artist Hermine David 1886-1970. The subject is a group of strollers in Luxembourg Gardens, Paris. This painting done circa 1930 is signed lower right and measures 18 1/8X15 inches. Housed in a custom French style frame. Hermine was one of the Ecole de Paris artists. In 1918 she married Jules Pascin. Their association seems to have been an influence on the artwork of both artists.
