This is a signed oil on canvas painting adhered to a board, measuring 17 x 11 1/4 inches in a 21 x 15 inch gold frame. William Preston Phelps was a plein air painter, known as the "Painter of Monadnock." He spent most of his life in Dublin and Chesham, NH, and he painted many landscapes of farms, fields, and forests, on and around Mount Monadnock. In 1876, he traveled to Europe and began studying at the Royal Academy of Art in Munich. He later moved to New York and then back to Europe with his friend William Meritt Chase.
