Prints

This early 20th century etching by the American artist Robert Hogg Nisbet measures 8 7/8 x 11 7/8 inches, pencil signed and titled. Nisbet's artistic talents were apparent at an early age, enrolled in the Rhode Island School of Design at age 8. With some schooling in NY and time abroad, he later taught at Brown University. Among his many accomplishments were several etching awards, and the National Arts Club prize. Near the end of his life he settled in Kent, Conn where he founded the Kent Art Association. His works are exhibited in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the National Gallery and Library of Congress in Washington, D.C.

A drypoint etching from 1883. The plate measures 6 1/2 x 11 1/2 inches on 8 1/2 x 14 1/4 inch laid paper. A well inked impression with plate toning and a rich drypoint burr. Plate signed and dated in the lower right. Clements studied with Thomas Eakins at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts and etching with Stephen Parrish before moving to Baltimore where she lived and taught for over 15 years.

This 1623 engraving by Ottavio Leoni measures 5 5/8 x 4 3/8 inches. It is a portrait bust of the artist Antonio Tempesta in a 12 sided frame. Bartsch 38. A collection seal is stamped on the back. Leoni did a series of 12 engraved portraits of fellow artists including Michelangelo, which is the only documented portrait of him by another artist.

This series of thirteen townscapes are images of shipping ports, market places, hotels, busy neighborhoods, historical buildings, castles, and cathedrals all surrounded by the element of water. They show the interplay and the importance of the waterways to the towns and their dependance on each other. Individual prints are titled in Dutch at the top center and were done c. 1660-1690.
