This great "Theater of Folly", representing the origin, progress, and downfall of the South Sea Bubble in France, England and Holland, is a collection of engraved plates with caricatures of the schemes of John Law and the Mississippi Company that lured clients to invest in establishing colonies in Louisiana and Canada with fatal results. This 1925 etching of an old woman by the Austrian artist Arthur Paunzer measures 5 7/8 x 4 1/2 inches, plate dated and pencil signed. Paunzer studied at the Academie Julien in Paris and traveled to Italy where he studied art and architecture. His works are included in the Albertina Museum, Vienna, the British Museum, London, Princeton University Library and the Cleveland Museum of Art.
