This 1887 etching by the Irish American artist, Thomas Hovenden, measures 19 1/2 x 13 3/4 inches, pencil signed, remarque on l.l. of shaving mug with brush, copyright info on l.c. Thomas Hovenden was born in Cork, Ireland, studying at the Cork School of Design before emigrating to the US at age 23, enrolling at the National Academy of Design in NYC and working as an illustrator for Harper's magazine. He went on to study in Paris at the Ecole des Beaux Arts under Alexander Cabanel before settling back in the US in the Pennsylvania area. Known for his portrayal of African-Americans going about everyday life, during a time when they were treated less than fairly. His wife's family were abolitionists and his studio was previously used as a stop for the underground railroad.

This is a rare early etching by American artist Joseph Pennell. The title is Brasserie, Au Lion Rouge, created and printed in 1893 in an edition of only 40 impressions. The image measures 6 1/4X8 1/8 inches. Hand signed in pencil and also signed by the printer Goulding. This early image shows the influence that Whistler had on Pennell, in both the style and technique. Nice use of plate tone within the image. This image appears in the Wuerth catalog as image number 188. A fine view of a Paris Brasserie. This impression was last sold by Frederick Keppel and Co in New York. Label included.

This is a fine original lithograph by American artist Leonard Baskin. This image taken from his series of Indian portraits that he created in 1972. This image is titled: Chief Wets it, Assiniboine, This pencil signed and numbered impression, 24/160, measures an image of 32X22 on a sheet size of 35 1/2X25 inches. Mint condition. This image appears in the Baskin catalog as image number 609.
This is a very richly inked original etching by French artist Albert Besnard. The image size is 11 3/8 x 7 5/8 inches, published in 1887 in an edition of fewer than 100 impressions, cat: Coppier- 63, pencil signed. Besnard studied at the Ecole des Beaux Arts in Paris and for the beginning of his artistic career concentrated on a very academic style of painting and composition, before adopting a more impressionistic approach of portraying light and color; later he went to England to study portraiture with Thomas Gainesborough and Joshua Reynolds.

This is a fine large etching by French artist Alphonse Legros. The title is; Le Retour du Bois (Return from the Woods), Created circa 1880's. This was part of his series known as Death and the Wood cutter. This pencil signed impression measures 9 1/4X14 inches. Legros was a well known founder of the etching revival in France. This is one of his largest compositions. This image is in the collections of many museums through out the world. The catalog listing is Bliss 565. Printed on a medium weight laid type paper with partial watermark.

This is a very fine original etching and drypoint by British artist Sir Francis Seymour Haden. The title of this work is "On the Test", state VI/VIII. This etching was created in 1859 and its subject is one of the famous Trout streams in Hampshire. The image measures 5 15/16X 8 15/16 inches, pencil signed lower right and also signed in the plate. This appears in the Schneiderman catalog as image number 24.
