Oil on canvas, 15 x 21 1/2 inches, c. 1880s, attributed to John Appleton Brown, partial monogram lower left corner, in a period frame. John Appleton Brown was born in Newburyport, Ma and studied painting with Albert T. Bricher and Benjamin C. Porter, then traveled to Paris to study with Emile Lambinet. He became known for his Barbizon inspired landscapes of New England and images of apple orchards, earning himself the nickname "Appleblossom Brown." Brown was a member of the Society of American Artists and the National Academy of Design. He exhibited his work at the Paris Salon, The Boston Art Club, The Carnegie Institute, and the Art Institute of Chicago, as well as in exhibitions with the Society of American Artists and the National Academy of Design.
An early etching by Gene Kloss, this is a very richly inked scene of boats moored on the quiet harbor waters of San Francisco Bay. The image size is 9 x 10 inches, published in 1935 in a small edition of 75, pencil signed, titled and numbered. Gene Kloss was born in California as Alice Geneva Glasier, changing her name when she married the poet, Phillip Kloss in 1925. On their honeymoon, the Kloss's traveled to and fell in love with Taos, New Mexico. For over a decade they split their time between Taos and Berkely, CA; Gene Kloss becoming a central figure in the artistic communities of both states. This etching is in pristine condition and features a richly inked impression with superb plate tone on a heavy weight wove type paper.
This is an original etching by French artist Jacques James Tissot. It is titled:" L'Enfant Prodigue", from the series The Prodigal son in modern life. "The fatted calf" This etching was from the first state of 2 in an edition of 100. This edition was done before the type set text under the image and this one is quite rare that it is also hand signed by the artist in the lower right corner as well as plate signed and stamped with the red seal in the lower left. The image measures 10 3/4X14 1/2 inches, the platemark measures 12 1/4X14 1/2 inches. Printed on a wove type medium weight paper. A finely inked impression....
Etching with drypoint, image size 15 1/2 x 9 1/2 inches, c. 1890, edition of 20, pencil signed. Helleu began his art career when he enrolled at the Ecole des Beaux Arts and worked as an apprentice for Theodore Deck, decorating ceramic plates with women's portraits. He became friends with many artists of La Belle Epoch, including John Singer Sargent, Whistler, Tissot, Monet and Rodin, and became well known for his elegant portraits of women of French society. The young girl in this portrait is Helleu's daughter Ellen.
This is an expressive original etching by French master Jacques Villon (1875-1964) The title of this work is "Minne Etendue Dans Un Rocking-Chair,Le Repos" It was created and printed in 1907 in an edition of 50, this one is inscribed as "no.7 of the edition. The image measures 6 3/4X9 3/4 inches. It is hand signed in pencil, published by Sagot in Paris, blind stamp lower border and was last sold by Associated American Artists in New York. with their certificate of Authenticity. A very fine and well inked impression, a great example of Villon's earlier work from his pre-cubist days in Paris.
Lithograph, image size 15 3/8 x 18 inches, 1932, pencil signed. Born in Poland, Max Weber emigrated to Brooklyn, New York with his family at the age of 10. He went on to study art at the Pratt Institute in Boston, then traveled to Europe where he was influenced by the groundbreaking work of Henri Matisse, Pablo Picasso and Henri Rousseau. Weber returned to America, bringing with him the cubist and modernist ideas and techniques that he learned in Europe, and is considered by many to be one of the forefathers of American modernism.
This is a very cool lithograph on zinc, image size 12 5/8 x 17 7/8 inches, 1919-1920, from a very small edition of 27 or fewer impressions, cat: Czestochowski-134, printed by Bolton Brown, pencil signed. Provenance: The Cleveland Museum of Art. Davies was a truly remarkable artist of the late 19th and early 20th centuries known for his dreamlike etchings and lithographs. In his catalog raisonne of Davies work, Czestochowski writes "In a time of social, political, scientific and artistic upheaval, Davies hewed to an unwavering inner vision, one of classically graceful figures in an eternal dance with nature." This image is a beautiful homage to the ancient Greeks, which Davies portrays in his distinctive style that is at once quite classical and quite modern.

This is a rare original etching by American 19th century artist Stephen Parrish. The title of this work is "A Gale at Fecamp,Normandie" It was created and printed in 1886. This was Parrish's only etching with such complete remarques all around the central image. The etching measures 13 3/4X15 3/4 inches. The remarques show all of the life and memories of Parrish's trip to France in the 1880's. This etching is hand signed in pencil and is a vary scarce image. It appears in the Schneider catalog as image number 117. "He was clearly influenced by the symphonic margins of French etcher Felix Buhot, with whom he had correspondence. The remarques reveal Parrish's lively sense of humor"....This etching is framed and appears to be in excellent condition.

This lovely oil on canvas by the New England artist Joseph Lindon Smith measures 12 x 9 inches, title and artist inscribed on the back, housed in a 19th century gilt frame, 1894. Smith was a founding member of the Dublin Art Colony in Dublin, NH and lifelong friends with the artist Frank Benson and Isabella Stewart Gardner. He studied at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston and the Academie Julian in Paris.
This is a very grand watercolor by noted British artist Joseph Nash (1808-1878). The sight size of this painting is 26 1/8 x 18 3/4 inches, it was painted in 1846 and is signed and dated in the lower right corner. Joseph Nash studied art and architecture with Augustus Charles Pugin, becoming known for his finely detailed images of British architecture, from cathedrals to castles and manors. He would very often place a group of people in the foreground of his compositions, in a way that brought life and energy to the architecture, as can be seen in this image. Nash was a member of the Society of Painters in Water Colours and frequently exhibited his work there as well as at the Royal Academy, The British Institution, and The New Watercolour Society.

This atmospheric etching is a great example of the delicate lines and precise detail for which Arms was known. This image won several awards in the early 1940s; the Mrs. Henry F Noyes Memorial Prize for best print at the 27th Annual Exhibition of the Society of American Etchers, New York, N.Y. 1943; the First Prize in Black and White Section at the 12th Annual Exhibition of the Irvington Art and Museum Association, Irvington, N. J. 1945; and the First Prize in Black and White at the Annual Art Exhibition of the Bridgeport Art League, Bridgeport, CT. 1945.
A beautiful subtly colored etching and aquatint, image size 19 1/4 x 13 5/8 inches, 1907, pencil signed in the lower left corner of the image. One of the leading French artists of the ‘Belle Epoch,’ Robbe studied at the Academie Julien and the Ecole des Beaux Artes, becoming a master of the aquatint medium. He developed much of his own aquatint techniques, which enabled him to create his uniquely painterly, richly colored images. Many of Robbe's compositions capture intimate personal moments, such as this image of a woman adjusting her hat in a mirror before going out.

It is hand signed in pencil in the image and editioned as number 55. This etching is framed and originally sold by Merrill Chase Galleries, label on the back.
