This is an original oil on canvas painting by American Hudson River artist James McDougal Hart. The painting measures 30X23 inches, signed and dated 1881 in the lower left corner. This painting came to us in what appears to be the original period frame. The painting had been lined and is in excellent condition. A beautiful work, Hart at his best. "Born in Kilmarnock, Scotland, James Hart was a leading figure of the second generation Hudson River School painters and was known for idyllic landscapes, especially with cows. His family emigrated to Albany, New York in 1830 ". James McDougal Hart served as the Vice President for three years of the National Academy of Design. He became a member in 1859.
This is an original oil on canvas painting by American marine artist Harry Chase. The title is: Windy Day Coast of Holland. It is signed and dated , Scheveningen 1879 in the lower right corner and titled on the back of the canvas. The painting measures 20X36 inches and is in a fine carved gilt picture frame. This painting was created during his time studying in Holland under Mesdag and Gerdts. He was strongly influenced by the Hague School of Dutch Impressionism. He brought back to America many of his paintings done in those three years in Holland. These paintings were brought back to St. Louis where they were offered in a solo show at Pettes and Leathe Gallery in St. Louis in 1880. All of his paintings were sold at this show.He also illustrated the catalog with etchings of his paintings.. This one, A Windy Day, was purchased by Marc Holmes of St. Louis, later Chicago. This is an original early William Preston Phelps painting titled: The Homestead, N.H. This oil painting from circa 1890 has a canvas size 18X30 inches. It is in a heavy Gold Leaf frame of the same period as the painting. There is a couple of old labels on the back. The painting is in good shape, no evidence of restoration. Signed lower left corner. The house in view is most likely Phelps own in Chesham New Hampshire.
This is a beautiful sundrenched scene by French artist Auguste Bonheur, oil on canvas, 23 1/2 x 31 1/4 inches, c. 1860, signed, in an ornate period frame. Auguste Bonheur was born into the Bonheur family of animal painters; his father, Raymond Bonheur was an art teacher as well as artist and taught painting to both Auguste and his older sister, the renowned animal painter Rosa Bonheur. The Bonheurs kept a small barnyard with sheep, chickens, and a cow, which they would often portray in their paintings. Auguste especially excelled at landscapes, which he depicted with a bright clarity of light and color, often including the farmyard animals in his scenes. Auguste was quite successful in his own time, he exhibited regularly at the Paris Salon as well as at galleries in London and Leeds. In 1861 Theophlie Gaultier wrote,"Auguste Bonheur has dared - and it is great audacity - to unvarnish nature, to take away the smoke and the dirt, to wash off the bitumen sauce with which art ordinarily covers it, and he has painted it as he sees it. His animals have the soft and satin-like skin of well-to-do animals; his foliage, the bright freshness of plants washed by the rain and dried by the sun."
Oil on panel, 11 x 16 inches, cradle backing, signed lower right, in an ornate period gilt frame. A very well regarded artist of the French Realism movement, Emile Lambinet was born in Versailles and studied with Horace Vernet and John Baptiste Camille Corot. Both of these artists greatly influenced Lambinet's mature style of painting, as can be seen in this image, with the exacting details and bright atmosphere of Vernet and the subtle color palette with just a few accents of saturated color of Corot. Lambinet showed his work regularly at the Paris Salon, winning medals in 1843, 1853 and 1857, and in 1867 was made a Chevalier of the Legion de'Honnuer. Today Lambinet's paintings can be found in many museums worldwide, with the largest collection of his work at the Musee Lambinet in the artist's hometown of Versailles.
This is a very fine painting of a man and his dog fishing in Lake Geneva, Switzerland. Oil on canvas, 18 x 26 inches, c. 1880, signed in the lower left corner, in an ornate period gilt frame, most likely the original. Another very similar painting by Vuagnat of the same location is in the collection of the Victoria Museum, Melbourne, Australia.
This is an early still Life of Flowers, oil on chamfered panel by American artist Abbott Fuller Graves. Created circa 1900 this painting is signed lower left corner and has an image size of 8 5/8 X 6 5/8 inches. Good condition with a few minor cracks in the panel, unobtrusive. This painting is housed in a period gilt frame. Graves worked with both Edmund Tarbell and Childe Hassam who he met while studying in Paris at the Academie Julian. The former owner purchased this painting at Christies Auction House, N.Y. at their American Painting sale of March 1992.
This is an oriignal oil on canvas painting by American artist William Lester Stevens. The scene is an old Farm in Summer located in Conway Mass where the artist lived. The painting measures 25X30 inches, clearly signed lower right, "W. Lester Stevens N.A." This painting circa 1940 is done with some areas of heavy impasto and bright colors. "Born in Rockport, Massachusetts, impressionist painter William Stevens lived and worked in the area for many years. In the later part of his life, he moved to Conway, Massachusetts.
His first art study was with Parker Perkins, and then he attended the Boston Museum School as a student of Edmund Tarbell, Frank Benson, Philip Hale and William Paxton. He taught at Princeton and Boston Universities, and by 1964 had won more awards than any other living artist."
This is an impressive large seascape by American Marine painter Franklin Dullin Briscoe. This view of fishing boats at sunset, oil on canvas with an image size of 28X50 inches. It is signed and dated lower right corner, 1873. This painting came to us in a fine modern cove style gilt frame. The overall size of the frame is: 34X56 inches. One of the best Briscoes weve seen.
Oil on canvas, sight size 9 1/4 x 15 1/2 inches, c. 1900, signed l.r., inscription on the back reads "Near Aber, North Wales". This is a beautiful landscape with a shepherd and his sheep set against a majestic mountain background, in an ornate period frame. John Fullwood exhibited at the 1877 Royal Birmingham Society of Artists Show. The Royal Birmingham Society of Artists, established in 1821, was highly influential during the Pre-Raphaelite and Arts and Crafts periods. Its members included some of the most significant figures in English art, and presidents during the period included artists of the stature of Edward Burne-Jones, William Morris, John Everett Millais, Frank Brangwyn, and Lord Leighton.
This is a very fine Marine painting, an original oil on canvas , unsigned, very much in the style and technique of Edward Moran. We are offering this painting as attributed to Moran only. A fine view of coastal shipping, circa 1870's. The canvas measures 24X36 inches. Housed in what appears to be the original gilt frame. This painting came from the impressive collection of the Reading Public Museum, in Reading PA. , the museum label is on the back. A very fine and detailed work of art.

This is an original oil on canvas by Dutch artist Arnold Marc Gorter (1866-1933) This landscape view with a Man in a row boat is signed lower left. The painting itself measures 15X20 inches. Very nice condition, recently cleaned and varnished. Very minor craquelure in the paint, unobtrusive. Everything is quite stable and very presentable. This painting came to us in a hand carved Gold Frame. Gorter is best known for landscapes and won a gold medal at the Paris salon in 1910.
This is an original oil on canvas painting by Adirondack artist Charles H. Chapin. This view of lake George is signed Chapin, lower left corner. The image measures 12X22 inches. The work is housed in a period gilt frame, possibly the original one chosen by the artist. The painting is in good stable condition but does have cracks in the paint. This would be minimized by a relining of the canvas, but the piece is very presentable as it now appears.
